Xi Jinping’s Meeting with UNESCO’s Director-General: A Step Towards Global Peace and Development

Sustained Cooperation between China and UNESCO
The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, on the 28th of September 2023, met with Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China and was focused primarily on enhancing the cooperation between China and UNESCO for the advancement of world peace and development. Xi Jinping highlighted that China has always supported the work of UNESCO and that both entities have collaboratively done many positive things to safeguard world peace and promote global development.

President Xi emphasized the cultural richness of the world, with China being one of the countries with the oldest history and culture. Xi Jinping stated that China’s tremendous development, with a population of over 1.4 billion people, is itself an important contribution to the progress of human civilization.

Xi Jinping outlined China’s commitment to building a great modern socialist country in all respects by the middle of this century. He mentioned China’s strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education, and its efforts in actively promoting the development of education, science, technology, and culture. Furthermore, Xi Jinping highlighted the importance China places on international exchanges and collaboration with UNESCO and other parties. He reiterated China’s readiness to work with UNESCO to contribute to the common development of the world.

Acknowledgement and Appreciation of China’s Support
Audrey Azoulay expressed gratitude for the Chinese government’s continuous support and high regard for UNESCO’s work. She particularly highlighted the significant role played by the UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education, which was established with China’s support, in promoting education for girls and women worldwide. Azoulay expressed satisfaction with the extensive consensus and cooperation between UNESCO and China in various fields, and expressed a desire to further strengthen exchanges and collaboration in cultural heritage protection, science, culture, and technology.
