Somalia Inches Closer to Joining the East African Community

After a series of negotiations with the East African Community (EAC), Somalia has made significant headway in its bid to join the regional bloc. Held from August 22 to 30, 2023, at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, these negotiations mark a crucial turning point in the country’s quest for EAC membership. The final report on the negotiation outcome is slated for presentation to the Council of Ministers, followed by the EAC Heads of State Summit in November 2023, where the final decision on Somalia’s admission will be rendered.
The successful conclusion of these negotiations is a clear testament to the power of cooperation and shared commitment to fostering regional bonds and mutual growth among member states. The Special Envoy to the EAC from Somalia acknowledged the unwavering commitment demonstrated by all stakeholders during the negotiation process.
