On Wednesday evening, challenging driving conditions were reported in several regions of Lithuania due to snowfall. Regions such as Utena, Molėtai, Švenčionys, and Ignalina are grappling with slippery roads covered in compressed or compacted snow, with depths reaching up to 10 centimeters.
Snowfall Impacts Western and Northeastern Lithuania
In Western Lithuania, and in the regions of Vilnius, Varėna, Zarasai, and Panevėžys, the majority of roads are wet, rutted, and slippery. Regional roads with lower traffic intensity remain rutted and covered with compressed or melting snow layers. Light snowfall is occurring in Western and Northeastern Lithuania, while other parts of the country are not experiencing significant precipitation.
According to the Hydrometeorology Service, light snow is expected during the night in some areas, with northwestern, western winds blowing at 6 to 11 meters per second. The temperature is forecasted to range from minus 6 to minus 11 degrees Celsius, with coastal areas expected to reach down to minus 4 degrees Celsius.
Impact on Southwest Region
Adverse winter weather is forecast across parts of the Southwest Region through at least early Dec. 2. Heavy snowfall is expected over mountainous areas in the Four Corners Region in the coming days, with a mix of lighter snow and rain at lower elevations. Snowfall accumulations of 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) are possible in the affected mountain ranges. The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions over the coming days.
