Belarus Security Forces Use 'Magnet' Bot for Surveillance on Telegram

In a remarkable display of technological surveillance, security forces in Belarus are reportedly installing a 'Magnet' bot on Telegram accounts of former political prisoners and those dabbling in 'home chemistry'. As per firsthand reports by several Belarusians under police surveillance to the 'Mirror', the bot seems to be installed when individuals reported to the police for preventive registration following their release from the colony.

What Does the 'Magnet' Bot Do?

The Magnet bot, once installed, downloads the user's entire Telegram data, phone book, and SMS, collecting primary data such as name, username, ID, and phone number. This data is then used to monitor the individual's chats and messages, providing the security forces with a detailed overview of the individual's communication activities.

Can the Bot Access Private Messages?

While it is widely believed that the bot cannot access private messages without passwords, there exists a distinct risk of other special software being installed that could potentially monitor calls and other activities on the device. This raises serious concerns about privacy intrusion and data security for the individuals being monitored.

Advice from Security Experts

In the wake of this situation, security experts are advising individuals to take precautions to safeguard their privacy. These include changing devices and SIM cards, resetting phones to factory settings, creating new Telegram accounts, and using separate accounts for different activities. Such measures are crucial to mitigate the risks associated with this level of surveillance.
