Bahamas Makes History by Securing Seat on International Organization for Standardization Council

A Groundbreaking Victory for the Caribbean Community
In a landmark achievement, the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ) announced on September 21, 2023, that the Bahamas had been elected to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Council for the 2024-2026 term. This is the first time a member state from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has secured a seat on this prestigious council, marking a significant milestone for the region.
Triumph at the ISO Annual Meeting
The Bahamas secured the highest number of votes among all voting groups at the closely contested election held at the ISO Annual Meeting in Brisbane, Australia. Tunisia won the second seat in Group 4, which represents Small Island Developing States (SIDS), while Uganda came in third. This election further diversified the 20-member ISO Council, adding five new member states – the Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the Bahamas, and Tunisia.
A Commitment to Global Quality Standards
BBSQ’s Executive Director, Dr. Renae Ferguson-Bufford, who successfully campaigned for the Group 4 seat, expressed her gratitude and commitment to serving her country and the global community. She emphasized the collective effort that led to this achievement and noted that it reflects the power of inclusivity and unity. The ISO Council plays a crucial role in developing international standards that support trade, innovation, and sustainability. Dr. Ferguson-Bufford’s appointment underscores the Bahamas’ commitment to these principles and its determination to drive global change.
Advocacy for Diverse Voices
During her tenure, Dr. Ferguson-Bufford plans to advocate for international standards that genuinely reflect the diverse voices and unique challenges of all nations, particularly SIDS. She is eager to collaborate with her council colleagues to develop partnerships that will enhance quality infrastructure, contribute to sustainability, and foster a more inclusive and prosperous world.
Reflecting on the Milestone
The Bahamas’ election to the ISO Council is a testament to the hard work of those who have diligently promoted quality standards worldwide. As the Bahamas takes its place on this prestigious council, it reaffirms the nation’s commitment to shaping global standards that reflect the aspirations of all nations and fostering a culture of quality within the country. This achievement is not only significant for the Bahamas but also for the Caribbean Community and Small Island Developing States who now have a voice on this global platform.
