Unclaimed Medicare Benefits Await Aussies: A Pre-Christmas Financial Windfall

Millions of dollars in unclaimed Medicare rebates are up for grabs for Australian citizens, a pre-Christmas financial windfall that could benefit nearly one million Aussies. The federal government has $234 million in unpaid Medicare benefits, primarily due to people not updating their bank account details with Medicare.

Claiming Unpaid Medicare Rebates

According to Government Services Minister Bill Shorten, individuals can claim their unclaimed rebates by ensuring their banking details are current with Medicare. Once the details are updated, any unclaimed rebates will be automatically paid within three days. Notably, around 300,000 people who are owed money don't have an active myGov account, and more than 690,000 with an active myGov account will be notified about their due Medicare funds.

Residents of New South Wales could receive the most cash back, with 284,000 people eligible for a share of $72.6 million in unclaimed benefits. Victorians and Queenslanders follow closely, with $59.7 million and $46 million in unclaimed rebates, respectively. Individuals can update their bank details by logging into myGov and selecting Medicare, then 'View and edit my details' from the 'My details' menu.

Younger Australians Missing Out

Interestingly, younger Australians are the largest group who have missed out on their Medicare refunds. Over 220,000 people aged between 18-24 are owed more than $49 million, averaging about $240 per person. The total unpaid benefits for Australians aged between 25 and 44 amount to $50 million. Older Australians aged between 55 to 75 are missing out on $60 million. Individuals can access further information by visiting servicesaustralia.gov.au/getmedicarebenefits.
