Armenia and Artsakh: A Comprehensive Overview of the Ongoing Conflict

Armenia and Artsakh, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, have been stuck in a carousel of conflict with Azerbaijan. These disputes have attracted attention from international entities, including members of the European Parliament and U.S. congressmen. The U.S. State Department has openly criticized both Russia’s involvement in this conflict and Turkey’s attempts to establish a corridor in Zangezur. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry maintains that it is working towards stabilizing the situation.

The Humanitarian Crisis
Over 13,000 people have been forcibly displaced from Karabakh and sought refuge in Armenia, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis in the region. Adding to the distress, an explosion at a fuel warehouse in Stepanakert resulted in 290 injuries and seven fatalities. Emergency medical teams and supplies have been dispatched to assist the victims. Various countries, including France and Azerbaijan, have offered help, and there is potential for aid from the U.S. as well.
Yerevan has witnessed a resurgence of civil disobedience actions. U.S. officials and an EU ambassador have recognized the challenging conditions facing Armenia. The U.S. and EU are exploring the establishment of an international mission for Nagorno-Karabakh and are prepared to support displaced individuals. USAID’s Administrator has emphasized the potential benefits of peace in the region.

The Zangezur Corridor Controversy
Discussions between U.S. and Turkish officials regarding the Zangezur corridor have taken place. This concept, promoted by Azerbaijan, has been a source of concern for Armenia.
Armenia’s Ministry of Health is coordinating the treatment for victims of the Stepanakert explosion. The Armenian Ombudsman has been engaging with displaced persons from Karabakh. Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Armenia has been discussing joint programs with the Russian Minister of Internal Affairs.
