Sony has officially announced the launch of a new slim model of the PlayStation 5 set for release on December 6, 2023, in Australia. This redesigned iteration of the globally popular console addresses previous criticism regarding the imposing size of the launch model. With pre-orders now open, gamers can anticipate a more compact and sleek design that can comfortably fit on their TV cabinets.

Sony's Slim PS5: Compact Yet Powerful

The slim PS5, while retaining identical functionality to the original model, boasts significant improvements in terms of size and weight. The console's volume has been cut by over 30%, and it is up to 24% lighter, offering a more space-efficient design without compromising performance. Furthermore, this new model will be compatible with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive, offering more versatility to users. The slim PS5 will come with a horizontal stand, with a vertical stand available separately for those preferring that orientation.

Improvements extend to the storage capacity as well, which has been upgraded from 825GB to 1TB, with options for additional expansion drives like the WD Black SN850 or Samsung 990 Pro. In response to the aesthetic preferences of gamers, Sony has announced the forthcoming launch of a range of colorful PS5 Console Covers, including a much-anticipated matte black cover and several Deep Earth Collection colors. These new covers, compatible with the slim model, are expected to be released early next year, with pricing to be confirmed later.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for both the digital and disc drive versions of the slim PS5 remains the same as the original models, with the digital version being less expensive unless an additional disc drive is added later. This would ultimately cost more than buying a disc-based console initially. The new console is now available for pre-order and expected to ship by December 6, making it a potential Christmas gift for tech enthusiasts. As Sony continues to innovate and respond to user feedback, the slim PS5 represents a significant step forward in providing a more compact and versatile gaming experience.
