A Continuing Trend

This year's early sellout is part of an ongoing trend. The event has reached capacity for the fourth year in a row. The 2016 marathon also recorded a sellout, concluding with a record number of 7,518 finishers. The increasing interest in Grandma's Marathon is attributed to positive word-of-mouth following three years of favorable weather conditions and a surge in individuals who took up running during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Impact of the Pandemic

Zach Schneider, the marathon's marketing and public relations director, suggests that the surge in participation may be a reflection of the pandemic runners' readiness to engage in larger events. The pandemic has led to a boom in running, with many people picking up the sport as a way to stay fit and active during lockdowns. Now, with the easing of restrictions, these runners are eager to participate in marathons and other large-scale events.

Setting Records

The marathon experienced a significant boost in registrations on the same day the Twin Cities Marathon was canceled due to extreme heat. This led to a record for first-day registrations in October. With 6,690 finishers in the 2023 marathon, Grandma's Marathon has earned the distinction of being the 10th largest in the United States. The New York City Marathon holds the top spot, with 51,297 finishers.

In light of the overwhelming demand, the organizers aim to deliver a memorable experience that will encourage participants to return in the future. As the marathon continues to grow in popularity, it is clear that Grandma's Marathon is not just a race – it's a community event that has captured the hearts of runners nationwide.
