BCB Announces Squad for Under-19 Asia Cup; Mahfuzur Rahman to Lead

In a strategic shift aimed at bolstering their performance, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has revealed a reshuffled 15-member squad for the forthcoming Under-19 Asia Cup. The tournament is slated to kick-off on December 8th in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Mahfuzur Rahman has been handed the mantle of captaincy, succeeding regular captain Ahrar Amin, following a disappointing run in a recent four-nation tournament in India.

A New Dawn for Bangladesh Cricket

The decision to anoint Rahman as the new captain comes on the back of Bangladesh's less than satisfactory performance, where under Amin's leadership, the team ranked third in a four-nation tournament in India, losing five out of seven matches. The BCB hopes that the change in leadership will reinvigorate the squad's morale and performance. Besides the principal squad, three players have been designated as standbys, ready to step in if required.

Upcoming Challenges and Competition

The Bangladesh Under-19 team is scheduled to embark for the UAE on December 6th, where they will compete in Group B alongside the host nation, Sri Lanka, and Japan. Group A boasts of the current champions and historically the most successful team, India, along with their rivals Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Bangladesh's campaign will commence against the UAE on December 9th, followed by matches against Japan and Sri Lanka on December 11th and 13th, respectively.

The Road to the Finals

The semi-finals are penciled in for December 15th, with the grand finale set for December 17th. The 2019 tournament saw Bangladesh delivering their best performance when they reached the finals, only to suffer a narrow defeat to India by a mere 5 runs.

On a broader note, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has relocated the forthcoming Under-19 World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa, scheduled for January-February of the subsequent year. This presents the young Bangladeshi squad with an opportunity to sharpen their skills and strategies ahead of the World Cup.
