Åland United Fails to Secure Awards at Captains Ball; Young Talents Emerge in Finnish Football

In a turn of events at the prestigious Captains Ball, the annual gathering of the Finnish football community to distribute awards, Åland United's nominated players and coach returned home empty-handed. Among the nominees from the team were Jessica Kiviaho, Jacqui Hand, and Aada Törrönen, along with their coach, Steve Beeks.

The Contenders and the Victors

Despite her exceptional performance, Jessica Kiviaho lost the award for the National League's best goalkeeper to Sofia Manner from FC Honka. Jacqui Hand and Aada Törrönen were in the race for the best forward in the National League, a title which ultimately went to Lotta Lindström from HJK. Lindström also bagged the league's top scorer title. Åland United's coach, Steve Beeks, was nominated for the best coach, a title that was claimed by Pauliina Miettinen who led KuPS to the championship.

The awards for the National League spanned various categories such as best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward, top scorer, star player, along with player's association awards for the best newcomer and player of the year. Similarly, awards in the Tips League were distributed for the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward, top scorer, and star player, with additional player's association awards for the best newcomer and player of the year.

The Rising Stars of Finnish Football

Along with the experienced players and coaches, the Finnish football community also celebrated the rise of young talents like Matias Siltanen and David Ezeh. Siltanen, a midfielder for Veikkausliiga club KuPS and captain of the Finland U17 national team, was named The Boy Player of the Year by the Football Association of Finland after the 2023 season. David Ezeh, a centre-forward for Veikkausliiga club HJK and the Finland under-19 national team, made his Veikkausliiga debut in the 2023 season and has represented Finland in various age brackets from U16 to U19 level.
