Tense Confrontation Breaks Out in Sabah State Assembly During Budget Discussion

A heated exchange erupted in the Sabah state assembly on Tuesday, November 28, between two prominent politicians, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin of BN-Lamag and Datuk Masiung Banah of GRS-Kuamut. The argument took place while discussing Sabah's 2024 Budget, one of the most crucial economic blueprints for the Malaysian state.

Origins of the Confrontation

The argument stemmed from Masiung's comments regarding the delivery of projects in his constituency, Tongod. Masiung criticised Bung Moktar for claiming credit for developments in the region, a claim that Bung Moktar vehemently denied. The confrontation escalated as Masiung delved into the distinction between the roles of an MP and an assemblyman, accusing Bung Moktar of not understanding the difference between state and federal government functions.

Bung Moktar, the MP for Kinabatangan, is a figure known for parliamentary outbursts. He defended himself by reminding Masiung of his own political beginnings, insinuating that it was Bung Moktar who helped Masiung enter politics. This denial of resorting to personal attacks further fuelled the confrontation.

Attempts to Maintain Order

Despite Deputy Speaker Datuk Richard Yong Ke Wong's efforts to maintain order, the two politicians continued their exchange. Bung Moktar challenged Masiung to clarify his contributions to Kuamut, a challenge that further exacerbated the tension. The session concluded with both assemblymen being advised to resolve their issues privately, marking a contentious end to a significant session of Sabah's state assembly.
