In a significant political development in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, was suspended from the winter session of the state's Legislative Assembly on November 28, 2023. The suspension followed his 'objectionable remarks' made against the Speaker, Biman Banerjee.
Incident During Constitutional Debate
The incident transpired during a debate on a resolution concerning the perceived threat to the Constitution of India. Adhikari, in conjunction with several other BJP MLAs, protested the expunging of parts of a speech delivered by BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh. This protest led to their suspension.
Aftermath of the Suspension
Following the suspension, the BJP legislators staged a walkout. They later filed a 'no confidence motion' against the Speaker. It is noteworthy that this is the second time Adhikari has faced suspension; the first instance was in March 2022, which was revoked in June 2022.
TMC Legislators Protest
In related news, Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators protested against the Central government's delay in releasing funds for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This protest followed instructions from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee which called for a protest from November 28 to 30.
