ProGlas Initiative Gains Momentum Amid Political Unrest in Serbia

Over 123,000 citizens, including 17,000 pensioners, have rallied behind ProGlas, an initiative aiming to create independent institutions and advocate for long-term political engagement in Serbia. The initiative emerged unexpectedly to the government, as acclaimed actor and director Dragan Bjelogrlić highlighted in a recent address in Novi Sad. Bjelogrlić, a vocal advocate of the movement, underscored that the government has engaged all its resources against ProGlas. However, he conceded that not everything is under their control.

Endurance in the Political Marathon

Bjelogrlić described the current political process as a marathon, rather than a decisive event. In his view, the establishment of an independent judiciary, a task no government has pursued, is a critical milestone in this race. He emphasized the relevance of a strong media in informing citizens and facilitating informed decision-making. In this context, Bjelogrlić promoted the daily newspaper Danas, which provides exclusive access to news and its complete online archive to subscribers.

The ProGlas initiative comes amid widespread anti-government protests sparked by two mass shootings in May, which claimed 18 lives and left several wounded, including students from a Belgrade elementary school. Protesters accuse government-controlled media outlets of cultivating a culture of violence and despair. They have called for the revocation of broadcasting licenses for media outlets promoting violence, the closure of government newspapers endorsing violence, and the resignation of key government officials. The government, in turn, has dismissed the protests as foreign-orchestrated publicity stunts.

ProGlas: A Beacon for Change

The ProGlas initiative aims to model the Law on the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media through dialogue with journalists. This is part of a broader effort to establish an independent body and foster accountability in the media landscape. Supporters of the initiative underscore the importance of solidarity and large voter turnout in effecting change. Despite attacks on the founders, the focus remains on laying a solid foundation for society and inspiring positive transformation.
