In a display of early celebration, posters congratulating Kamal Nath on becoming the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh were seen outside the Congress party's office in Bhopal, even before the counting of votes for the 2023 Assembly election began. The posters, installed by an enthusiastic Congress worker, read: "Congratulations to the honourable Kamal Nath for becoming Chief Minister."
Anticipation Amidst the Competition
Senior Congress leaders joined the chorus of congratulations on X (formerly Twitter), anticipating a victory for Nath. However, the premature celebrations were called into question as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has held dominance in the state since 2003, was widely expected to retain its position.
Confidence Vs Reality
Despite the BJP's strong track record, Congress leader Kamal Nath declared himself 'very confident' of his party's victory on the morning of the election. By 2.30 pm, however, reality painted a different picture. The BJP was leading in 165 seats, more than double the Congress's 63.
The Battle of Power
As the BJP took an early lead, the Congress's anticipatory celebration began to appear ill-timed. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the people have blessed the BJP's 'double-engine' government at the Centre and in the state because of its welfare and development policies. Despite a few exit polls suggesting a potential Congress government, the BJP remains a strong contender.
In the face of these results, the Congress's congratulatory poster for Kamal Nath stands as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of political battles, and the thin line between confidence and presumption.
