In a case that has gripped the nation, Yew Wei Liang, a former IT worker, has been found guilty of causing the death of Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Syakir, a bank manager.
The fatal incident occurred on the North South Expressway, following a minor accident at the Sungai Besi toll plaza on August 10, 2019.
Change in Charge and Postponement of Sentencing
Wei Liang was originally charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty. However, this charge was later amended to Section 304(a), which has a maximum sentence of 30 years' imprisonment.
Following the change in charge, the sentencing decision was postponed by the High Court in Shah Alam until Thursday. The defense, led by Wee Choo Keong, requested additional time to prepare their mitigation arguments.
The presiding judge, Julia Ibrahim, emphasised the importance of both the prosecution and defense having adequate time to present their cases. She said, 'Both parties should have a fair and equal opportunity to present their positions before sentencing.'
Victim's Untimely Demise
Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Syakir succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Nilai Medical Centre on the day of the incident.
The case has drawn considerable attention on social media, shedding light on the implications of road rage and the devastating consequences it can have.
