Early Literacy Backpacks: A Gateway to Learning

The Early Literacy Backpacks at the Ives branch of the New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) stand out as a testament to the library’s commitment to early childhood education. Each backpack is carefully curated to include two to three books, age-appropriate manipulatives, and laminated activity sheets that promote the five critical early literacy skills: reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing. Themes range from alphabet and colors to cooking and seasons, providing a diverse range of learning opportunities. The initiative not only supports early reading habits but also fosters an environment of learning through play.

Community Response and Future Plans

Since their introduction, the Early Literacy Backpacks have received positive feedback from the community, with children excited to select and take home a new kit on each library visit. This enthusiasm serves as a motivating factor for the NHFPL to continue expanding the program, including the addition of more backpacks and the exploration of opportunities for multilingual early literacy. Currently, these innovative learning tools are exclusively available at the Ives Main Library Children's Room, highlighting the importance of accessible educational resources in public libraries.

New Additions to the Library’s Collection

In addition to the Early Literacy Backpacks, the NHFPL is excited to announce new book additions across various age groups for March 2024. The children’s collection sees the introduction of titles such as "My Mother's Tongues: A Weaving of Languages" by Uma Menon and "Eyes that Weave the World's Wonders" by Joanna Ho. The teen and adult sections also welcome a range of new books, including "Out of Body" by N.E. Davenport and "Last to Eat, Last to Learn: My Life in Afghanistan Fighting to Educate Women" by Pashtana Durrani, among others. These additions underscore the library’s dedication to providing diverse and enriching materials for its patrons.

As the NHFPL continues to innovate and expand its educational offerings, the Early Literacy Backpacks and the latest book additions represent significant steps forward in supporting the community’s learning and development needs. By fostering a love for reading and learning at an early age, the library plays a crucial role in shaping the future of its youngest patrons.
