Her mother, an ardent advocate for natural ingredients over industrial cubes like Maggi, initially introduced her to this recipe.
Interestingly, this fish broth is not just a household recipe. It represents the pioneering efforts of a cooperative named “Women in Action”, established in 2005, which has been at the forefront of promoting this dish.
Women in Action: A Beacon of Empowerment
The cooperative is more than a culinary innovation hub. It serves as an empowerment center for rural women, providing a range of training programs in collaboration with the government. The aim is to empower these women, equipping them with skills that will help them become self-reliant.
In a bid to cut down production costs, the cooperative has incorporated fish farming by installing above-ground tanks. They also source fish from high production areas in central Mali, further ensuring a steady supply of the primary ingredient for their broth.
The Production Process: From Fish to Flour
The journey from fresh fish to the final product is a meticulous process. Upon delivery, the fish are thoroughly cleaned and then placed in dryers for seasoning. Following this, the fish are ground into a powder to form flour, which is then mixed with various natural spices. The broth is then well-packaged, ready for sale and consumption.
The Genesis of the Fish Broth
A remarkable tale surrounds the origin of this fish broth. The idea was birthed by the late Sirébara Fatoumata Diallo, one of the pioneers of the cooperative. She had been advised against using Maggi cubes, prompting her to devise a healthier and cheaper alternative.
Evolution of the Cooperative
What began as a small group of 14 dedicated women has now blossomed into a cooperative of about a hundred members who work on a permanent basis. As the cooperative expanded, it began to include activities for men, further diversifying its impact.
