Malaysian cooperative, Koperasi Usahawan Peniaga Inanam Bhd (KoUPIO), is set to extend its debut product, 'Coffee Cactus,' to international markets such as Brunei, Singapore, and China. The product, developed by the cooperative's 25 members, is a unique blend of robusta coffee and prickly pear cactus fruit, and is marketed as a convenient three-in-one mixed coffee packet.
Confidence in the Product's Potential
Chairman of KoUPIO, Datin Esther Sikayun, voiced her confidence in the product's potential and uniqueness. Notably, Coffee Cactus is known for its health benefits, including body refreshment, cholesterol reduction, and antioxidant properties. KoUPIO's venture into international markets represents a significant step in the cooperative's growth and diversification strategies.
Next Product in Line: Lemongrass Essential Oils
Furthermore, KoUPIO is collaborating with University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to produce essential oils from fragrant lemongrass, hinting at the cooperative's commitment to innovation and product development. This venture is supported by Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, who announced a special allocation of MYR20,000 to assist KoUPIO's lemongrass project.
Government Support and Encouragement
Ewon also approved a similar amount under the Product Development Scheme by SKM for the development of Coffee Cactus, focusing on labeling, packaging, and promotion. Ewon emphasized the importance of cooperative activities in the region, encouraging local residents to form cooperatives and highlighting the success of Koperasi Desa Cinta Kobuni Bhd, a cooperative engaged in tourism-related activities.
The news of KoUPIO's expansion and the government's support is a testament to the growing importance of cooperative activities in Malaysia and the potential impact of their products on global markets.
