Rwanda: Health Experts Advocate More Investment in Research

Announcing the 9th East African Health and Scientific Conference (EAHSC)
The 9th East African Health and Scientific Conference (EAHSC), an event of immense importance to the health sector and scientific community, is set to kick off in Kigali on Wednesday, September 27. This biennial event, convened by the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC) in collaboration with a host East African Community (EAC) Partner State, is a crucial platform for discussing regional health issues and fostering cooperation among member states.
Hosting of the EAHSC follows a rotational basis, ensuring each Partner State has the opportunity to spearhead this significant conference. The coordination of the event at the Partner State level involves the ministries responsible for EAC affairs, health, and other relevant sectors. The organization of the event is carried out in close collaboration with regional and international health-related NGOs, civil society, and stakeholders.
9th EAHSC: A Focus on Pandemic Preparedness and Response
The theme for this year’s conference was approved during the 22nd Ordinary meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers of Health held in July 2022. The main theme of the 9th EAHSC is “Strategies and Challenges to Preparedness and Response to Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases: Lessons Learnt from the COVID-19 Pandemic”.
Sub-themes for the conference include innovative approaches and interventions to strengthen health systems leadership, the world’s preparedness for future pandemics, addressing social, economic, and political impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and harnessing digital technologies for communicable and non-communicable disease response. The event will also host symposia on various aspects of health and disease management, providing a comprehensive look at the current state of global health.
Call for Abstracts
The EAHSC has opened a call for abstract submissions, allowing researchers, scientists, and health professionals to contribute to the discourse surrounding the conference’s themes. The scientific subcommittee will review all submissions and only successful applicants will be contacted. Accepted abstracts will be published in the East African Health Research Journal, providing a valuable platform for disseminating the latest research and findings to a wider audience.
Conference Dates and Details
The conference is set to begin on September 27 and will run until September 29. Registration for the event opens on July 26, while the deadline for abstract submission is July 25. Other important dates include the deadline for exhibition booth hire on September 29. Further details about the conference can be found on the official conference website.
EAHSC: A Platform for Collaboration and Progress
The EAHSC plays a vital role in promoting regional cooperation in health and enhancing the EAC’s ideals of free movement of people, services, and goods. By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and civil society, the conference provides a collaborative platform to address regional health issues, share knowledge, and work towards a healthier future for the East African region.
