Solano County Boosts Career Education, Forges Pathways for High School Success

Throughout February, the Solano County Office of Education (SCOE) took to social media to celebrate Career Technical Education (CTE) month, showcasing the diverse range of CTE classes available to high school students across Solano County. This initiative aligns with the broader goals set forth by the California legislature's 2018 K12 Strong Workforce Program (K12 SWP), which aims to enhance, create, and expand CTE courses and pathways. "Supporting career technical education opens doors to explore various careers, develop practical skills, obtain meaningful employment, and secure economic empowerment for students in Solano County," remarked Solano County Superintendent of Schools Lisette Estrella-Henderson.

Real-World Experience Through CTE

In a prime example of CTE's impact, the Vacaville Unified School District (VUSD) offers an automotive pathway internship at Will C. Wood High School. This program has seen notable success, with 58 students participating in job shadows and 14 completing a 20-hour paid internship, with an additional seven students expected to complete their internships by May 2024. This hands-on experience not only connects students with industry professionals but also provides them with the opportunity to earn early college credit, setting a strong foundation for their future careers.

SCOE's efforts to expand high school CTE pathways are further supported by increased articulations between high schools and Solano Community College (SCC). These articulations represent a collaborative effort to align high school and college courses, enabling students to fulfill college requirements and earn early college credit. From 2021 to 2023, six new articulations were introduced, participation in existing articulations increased, and seven new articulations are currently in progress. This strategic alignment between educational institutions underscores a commitment to providing students with a seamless transition from high school to college and beyond.

Future Pathways for Solano County Students

The recent awarding of the K12 SWP grant to SCOE signifies a continued investment in the future of Solano County's students. By supporting internship opportunities and further expanding CTE pathways, SCOE and Solano school districts are paving the way for certifications, degrees, and meaningful employment for high school students. This comprehensive approach to career technical education ensures that students are not only prepared for success in a wide range of industries but are also empowered to thrive in the local economy and beyond.

As Solano County and its education partners move forward, the impact of these initiatives on students, local businesses, and the broader community will undoubtedly continue to grow. By fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and opportunity, Solano County is setting a new standard for career technical education and workforce development.
