Two Individuals Fatally Shot in Separate Incidents as Arab Community Death Toll Reaches 182

In two separate incidents on Sunday evening, two men fell prey to a record crime wave sweeping through the Arab community. A 25-year-old man, later identified as Amr Abd al-Qadr, a resident of Tayibe, was shot near the city’s entrance. Despite paramedics rushing him to Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba, the man succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead. Another man, named Ashkar Ashkar, 43, was shot dead in Kabul in the northern part of the country. The Haaretz daily suggested a family dispute might have resulted in his killing.

The Abraham Initiatives anti-violence advocacy group shed light on these alarming figures. The two recent killings raised the toll of violent deaths in the Arab community this year to 182, more than double as compared to the same period in 2022. Out of the total, 165 individuals were reportedly killed in gunfire-related incidents.
An Underlying Crisis and Accusations of Neglect
Arab community leaders blame this violent crime wave on the alleged failure of law enforcement authorities to enforce regulations and battle criminal organizations within their community. They further claim that the violence is a symptom of decades-long government neglect and discrimination. Many believe that the root cause of these issues lies within this alleged institutional failure.
A Weekend Marred by Violence
The incidents on Sunday followed a similarly violent Saturday when yet another person was critically wounded in a shooting in Haifa. The victim, later identified as Edmund Dibi in his 50s, was taken to Rambam Medical Center in the city where he was declared dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that the killing surfaced from a family feud. Moreover, another separate shooting incident in the southern Bedouin city of Rahat resulted in the death of 18-year-old Bashar Abu Zajilah.

The increasingly high death toll in the Arab community underscores the urgency of addressing this violence. As the homicide rate, particularly the cases involving firearms, continues to rise unabated, the government’s role in mitigating this crisis warrants attention. In order to defuse this ongoing calamity, upcoming measures might need to incorporate targeted law enforcement strategies, strict surveillance of crime syndicates, and community-focused interventions.
