The Unfolding Tragedy

The gruesome discovery was made when neighbours were alerted by a foul smell emanating from P and D's rental house. Upon investigation, the bodies of four children aged between one and six years old were found in one of the rooms. P was found in the bathroom, collapsed with self-inflicted stab wounds and a knife nearby. He is suspected to have killed his children before attempting suicide.

The Iceberg Phenomenon

According to Rakhmat Hidayat, a sociologist from the State University of Jakarta (UNJ), this horrific incident is a classic case of the 'iceberg phenomenon'. It symbolizes how, similar to an iceberg, the visible problems are only a small manifestation of a vast, underlying issue. In this case, the mounting pressure and stress P was under, both internally within the family and externally from societal factors, led to the tragic outcome.

Domestic Violence and Its Consequences

P's wife D had been hospitalized due to injuries sustained from domestic violence, allegedly inflicted by P. This domestic abuse and its resulting consequences form a significant part of the underlying issues that culminated in the tragic event. The societal judgment and economic hardships that the family was undergoing only added to the strain.

Investigations Ongoing

While this tragic incident has shaken the community, investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the precise timeline and motivations behind the killings. Meanwhile, D is currently receiving intensive care at Pasar Minggu Regional Public Hospital. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences of unchecked stress and domestic violence, and the need for early intervention and support.
