Bengaluru Schools Receive Bomb Threats: Deja Vu or a New Challenge?

On Friday morning, a wave of panic swept through several schools in Bengaluru. Thirteen schools, including prominent institutions such as NEEV, KLAY, and Vidyashilp, received bomb threats via email. The sudden emergence of these threats resulted in the immediate evacuation of over 5,000 students, transforming ordinarily bustling campuses into eerie spaces of caution.

Bomb Threats: A Deja Vu

This isn't the first time that Bengaluru's schools have been targeted with such threats. The emails bear a striking resemblance to a series of hoax bomb threats that were sent to multiple schools in the city in 2022. Back then, the threats turned out to be a hoax, but the memory of that event has etched a deep sense of caution in the minds of school authorities and parents alike.

Masked Threats: A Cyber-Security Challenge

The emails sent on this occasion were from various addresses, with the senders adeptly masking the IP address to conceal their origin. This presents a formidable challenge to the city's cybercrime unit, tasked with unmasking the anonymous senders. Last year's investigation into similar threats led to the discovery that a minor from Tamil Nadu was responsible. He had used a specially created application to send the emails with masked IP addresses. However, the person who actually sent the emails remains a mystery.

A Swift Response: Safety First

In response to the threats, the schools took immediate action. NEEV School, for instance, swiftly informed parents about the threat, advising their wards to return home following the bomb squad's recommendation. The city police's anti-sabotage and bomb squads were brought into action, thoroughly checking the schools for any suspicious objects. Despite indications that the threats could be hoaxes, the police ensured due diligence, prioritizing the safety of the students and school premises.

As Bengaluru's schools grapple with this unsettling threat, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of the children and the speedy unmasking of the culprits behind these threats. The city's law enforcement agencies are on the job, racing against time to ensure peace of mind for anxious parents and school authorities.
