Mali on Course to Become Leading Cotton Producer in ECOWAS Region

The Republic of Mali, a West African nation, is set to regain the crown as the leading cotton producer in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This comes as the Malian Company for the Development of Textiles (CMDT), headed by Dr. Nango Dembélé, expects a surge in cotton production to 690,000 tonnes for the current campaign.

Mali's Cotton Production Outshines Regional Peers

Mali's ambitious cotton production goal outpaces two of its main regional competitors, Benin and Burkina Faso, that have recently seen a dip in their production. If Mali fulfills its production plans, it will rise above these nations in the cotton production hierarchy. The CMDT's progress so far is promising, having already processed 126% of its targeted 100,000 tonnes for this date. This progress suggests a strong likelihood of achieving the 690,000-tonne target by the campaign's conclusion on April 20, 2024.

Challenges in Cotton Production

Despite the upbeat expectations, Mali's cotton sector is not without its challenges. The primary issue is the transportation of cotton from production zones to factories, particularly in Kita, where the CMDT's western branch is located. In response, measures are being put in place to address these logistical hurdles, including transporting cotton bales to various ports.

Looking Ahead: New Developments and Acknowledgments

As an affirmation of his dedication to the development of the cotton sector, Dr. Dembélé was honored with a 'Ciwara' by Kita's regional executive head, Daouda Maïga. In addition to this, Dr. Dembélé announced the groundbreaking of a new ginning factory in Kokofata, promising further expansion and progress in Mali's cotton industry.

Despite minor electricity issues at the Kita factory, upgraded power generators are expected to keep production schedules on track. This resilience, coupled with strategic efforts to improve logistics, positions Mali to reclaim its status as the leading cotton producer in the ECOWAS region.
