The regulation, a beacon of environmental responsibility, mandates countries to actively combat deforestation, especially in agrarian sectors. It strives to ensure that goods marketed in the EU are devoid of any links to environmental degradation.

EU Importers Align with EUDR

EU-based importers, acting in anticipation of the EUDR, are pulling back on their coffee purchases. The law, with its stringent ban on goods associated with deforestation, has importers scrambling to comply.

Committed to the cause, the EU has earmarked a whopping 70 million euros at COP28 to assist producing nations and smallholders in adhering to the regulation.

Challenges for Ethiopia

However, Ethiopia, a nation where coffee contributes to 30-35% of total export revenue, finds itself in a precarious situation. A significant chunk of its coffee exports is destined for the EU, and the country grapples with meeting the EUDR's stringent prerequisites.

Poor internet coverage, land rights disputes, and subpar law enforcement are amongst the critical challenges Ethiopia faces.

Pathway to Sustainability

To retain its foothold in the lucrative EU market, Ethiopia must adopt sustainable and responsible production practices, bolster land management, and enhance supply chain transparency. Support for smallholder farmers, infrastructure advancements, governance fortification, and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices are pivotal for Ethiopia.

These measures will not only help safeguard its coffee export market but also contribute to the industry's long-term sustainability.
