HIV Diagnoses in Austria
In the previous year, 473 new HIV diagnoses were recorded in Austria, 70 of them in Upper Austria. Despite effective treatments that suppress the virus and make it non-transmissible, stigma and misinformation persist, as revealed by a survey. On World AIDS Day, Alexander Zoufaly, President of the Austrian AIDS Society, underscored that HIV is primarily sexually transmitted and that education helps combat discrimination.
Addressing HIV Stigma and Misinformation
Michael Hofbauer, who openly deals with his HIV diagnosis and has authored a book, aids newly diagnosed individuals through the Positive Buddys project of Aidshilfe Oberösterreich. HIV treatment consists of daily tablets that do not shorten life expectancy and have minimal side effects after ingestion. Early detection and treatment are crucial, as symptoms may only appear years after infection. Condom use and pre-exposure prophylaxis are recommended to prevent infection.
