The deal involved Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel in return for Israel creating a pathway to Palestinian statehood. During Blinken’s visit to Israel, Netanyahu expressed his unwillingness to agree to any arrangement that would lead to a Palestinian state.
Blinken’s Approach to the Middle East Conflict
Blinken emphasized that a military solution alone would not be sufficient to remove Hamas, asserting that acknowledging this fact is crucial to avoid repeating history. The proposal came on the heels of commitments from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other Arab leaders to fund Gaza’s reconstruction and support a reformed Palestinian Authority’s return to the area post-conflict.
The condition for normalization with Israel was not an immediate Palestinian state but steps towards Palestinian sovereignty. Netanyahu also agreed to refrain from a major attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon and to allow UN officials to assess conditions in northern Gaza for Palestinians returning home.
The US Continues to Work with Netanyahu
US officials clarified that while the Biden administration is not actively planning for a post-Netanyahu era, it is still working with him despite a 20-day lapse in communication with President Joe Biden. Blinken also met with other Israeli figures such as Minister Benny Gantz and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid.
A Hopeful Future
The US remains hopeful for peace in the Middle East, linking it to the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state and continues discussions on normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia. This is despite the price of the Palestinian component increasing due to recent conflicts. The war in Gaza began three months ago with a Hamas-led attack that killed approximately 1,200 Israeli civilians and took hostages, prompting an Israeli military offensive aimed at Hamas and the hostages’ recovery.
