Understanding the Cupi Cupita Case: A Dive Into Cyber Crime and Online Gambling

Summoned by the Cyber Crime Directorate
Famed singer Cupi Warsita, popularly known as Cupi Cupita, was recently summoned by the Directorate of Cyber Crime (Dittipidsiber) of the Indonesian National Police for questioning about her alleged promotion of an online gambling site. The inquiry lasted approximately five hours, during which Cupita and her legal representative were present.
Despite falling ill, Cupita showed resilience and satisfaction at having the opportunity to respond to the investigator’s summons. She expressed gratitude to her fans for their unwavering support during these challenging times and assured them that her legal representative was managing the case.
Allegations and Impact on Career
Cupita vehemently denied her involvement in online gambling and conceded that the allegations were negatively impacting her career. She expressed a keen desire to clarify the situation and resolve the matter at the earliest.
Her legal representative, Henky Solihin, reinforced her denial, asserting that Cupita was unaware that the content she was endorsing was related to an online gambling site. He stated she believed she was promoting an online game akin to Mobile Legends, a popular multiplayer online battle arena game.
Misrepresentation of Endorsement
Solihin shed light on how the endorsement was initially presented as an opportunity to promote an online game, which later turned out to be an online gambling site, misrepresented by others. The offer was made by a trusted individual who had previously provided Cupita with work opportunities, such as acting and singing.
The content in question was promoted by Cupita in 2020. As for the payment received for endorsing the content, Solihin refrained from disclosing the exact amount but emphasized that it was not substantial.
Cooperation with the Legal Process
Cupita expressed her willingness to fully cooperate with the ongoing legal process. She mentioned that she answered all the investigator’s questions based on factual evidence, especially concerning the alleged violation of specific laws. Solihin revealed that his client was asked over 20 questions during the session and confirmed that Cupita would continue to cooperate with the authorities and respond to any future summons.
This incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and potential pitfalls associated with digital marketing and online endorsement deals. It underscores the importance of comprehensive understanding and clarity on the part of influencers and their management teams before endorsing any product, especially those related to games or activities that might be subject to legal scrutiny.
