Singaporean DJ-host Dennis Chew recently crossed paths with Hong Kong’s renowned singer-actor Alan Tam during the Community Chest: Uniting Hearts 2023 Charity TV Show. The event, which aimed to rally support for over 200 social initiatives, successfully raised more than $16 million. A surprising revelation during their encounter was that both Chew and Tam share an alma mater—Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Chew, currently studying Chinese Media and Communication at the institution, took to Instagram to share this unexpected connection with his followers. Tam, who is 73, had attended the same institution over four decades ago, back when it was known as Ngee Ann Technical College.

From “School Senior” to “Principal”

In his social media post, Chew affectionately referred to Tam as his “school senior” and “principal,” a term of endearment resonating from Tam’s esteemed role as a mentor in the Hong Kong music industry. The shared educational background caught Chew off guard as he had previously believed Tam to have attended Singapore Polytechnic. He also nostalgically mentioned that during his younger years, he used to sing many of Tam’s widely-loved songs.

Though their paths have crossed several times in the past, Tam did not recall their previous encounters. However, Chew was quick to point out that Tam remained approachable and friendly. To Chew’s amusement, Tam complimented his hairstyle, pointing out its similarity to one of Tam’s past hairstyles, as suggested by a local film director.
